This paper is addressed to the traditional problem of demonstrating the relevance of production theory to management-oriented people. Activity analysis, it is argued, is the most appropriate pedagogic framework within which to commence either a production economics or a farm management course. Production economics theory has not been widely accepted as a useful method for the analysis of practical management problems. The theory has been traditionally presented in terms of continuous functions which assume away the question of technical efficiency. Activity analysis, in its general form, is a more comprehensive approach to the theory of production than the conventional neo-classical production function approach since activity analysis explicitly... |

Abstract Large numbers of thecamoebae are found in the sand and detritus substrate of small streams in the Amazonian terra firme forest. Their relative population densities can be determined by searching and counting thecae under a dissecting microscope for a standard time interval (constant effort sampling). The total population per sample can be calculated from a gradual linear depletion during successive such counts in a given sample (removal trapping). From a series of such regressions the total number of thecamoebae of any sample can be estimated from a single, first count. The method depends on specific conditions with regard to size of area searched, quantity of substrate per area, density of organisms per substrate and performance of the observers.... |

Laboratory experiments were conducted with juvenile Dicentrarchus labrax L. in order to determine their ability to grow and develop in fresh water on small zooplankton and zoobenthos. Fish of 0.036g. weight were able to grow on small Cladocera and Copepods. Juveniles of 25-29mm total length were able to feed on fry of Sarotherodon sp. D. labrax of 0.77g weight, fed Sarotherodon sp. showed an individual growth rate of 0.06-0.11 g/day and a food conversion rate of 8.18 when raised to the size of 3.57g. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

Agnathobathynella ecclesi gen. n., sp. n. is described from interstitial waters of a stream in Malawi (Africa). There are several unique features characterizing the new genus: mandibles without cutting part, paragnaths extremely elongated, teeth and setae of the maxillula and also the maxilla specialized in various ways, 8th male thoracopod without penis, thoracopods 1 to 7 with 3-segmented endopodites and very reduced setation. Probable relationships between the new genus and Nannobathynella as well as the Gallobathynellinae are discussed. The opinion that morphological diversification is relatively poor in the Bathynellidae is re-examined in the light of recent knowledge and is shown to be invalid. |
